Major fire in a marina in Barcelona – Pantaenius helps with the salvage

It started on a small scale but had devastating consequences. A major fire in the marina of the Catalan capital of Barcelona caused damage amounting to millions.

It was on an early February morning that a captain of a motor yacht smelt acrid smoke in the Port Vell marina in Barcelona. He reacted instantly and rushed to a neighbouring berth to wake the sleeping crew of the Dominator 78 where the clouds of smoke were coming from. The initial fire fighting measures were unsuccessful. Even the fire brigade, who arrived at the marina shortly afterwards, could not stop the flames spreading to two further motor yachts and a sailing boat. Although two harbour tugs with their extinguishing systems assisted the emergency services from the water side, all four boats burnt out completely and sank to the bottom of the dock within two hours.

Among the disabled vessels was also a Majora 31m which was insured with Pantaenius. “Our office in Palma de Majorca was informed of the incident by the Spanish owner on the 3rd February,” recalls Holger Flindt, head of the Pantaenius claims department in Hamburg. “We immediately sent one of our experts to Barcelona to get a picture of the situation together with a local surveyor.” The intervention of the fire brigade and the relocation of surrounding boats from the danger zone prevented further vessels from being affected. There were a  few cases of heat exhaustion and contamination by soot .  However, the sunken boats were  a total loss.

The total damage was in the region of more than € 16 m. The costs of salvage and wreck disposal are in addition to this, fortunately for the owner these were covered by Pantaenius’ hull insurancePantaenius were also involved in the salvage of the wreck on site.
